VP Engineering
The role
This is one of the most consequential hires we are making. You will join as VP Engineering with a mandate to unify, energise, and transform an engineering organisation that has real talent but currently lacks a shared direction. Reporting to the CEO and partnering closely with the Head of Product, you will set the technical vision and create the conditions for the team to do the best work of their careers. This role has a clear path to CTO for someone who earns it. What we need first is someone who can walk into a fragmented team and make it whole — and then lead it into genuinely new territory with AI at the centre.
Key Responsibilities
Build a Unified, High-Performance Engineering Team
Take ownership of a team currently organised around several leads without clear collective direction — diagnose the gaps, rebuild alignment and create a coherent engineering identity.
Establish a technical vision that the entire engineering team can rally around, and communicate it with the clarity and conviction that earns genuine buy-in.
Build the rituals, norms and ways of working that turn a collection of capable individuals into a team with shared momentum.
Develop and coach engineering leads, elevating management capability across the function.
Drive AI Transformation — With Urgency and Structure
The AEC and visualisation space is moving fast. AI is entering every layer — from generative design to asset creation to workflow automation. We need to be a front-runner, not a fast follower.
Define and implement a company-wide AI adoption framework: how we experiment, how we evaluate, how we scale what works, and how we retire what doesn't.
Bring genuine experimental energy to the role — this is not about managing a roadmap, it is about exploring what becomes possible when AI is embedded in how we build our products.
Tackle one of the hardest open problems in the space: preserving the full fidelity, dimension accuracy, and design intent of architectural work as AI enters the creation and construction pipeline.
Shape the Product Vision — Together with Head of Product
Partner with the Head of Product as a true co-creator of what Lumion becomes — not just implementing a roadmap but helping to define what the offering can be.
Bring a point of view on how real-time 3D engines, AI-generated assets, and collaborative workflows converge — and what that means for architects and visualisation professionals.
Help the company think beyond features into platform: what infrastructure, APIs, and technical foundations position Lumion for the next five years.
Own the Engineering Foundation
Ensure platform reliability, scalability and performance across our rendering and cloud infrastructure.
Own security posture, engineering compliance, and responsible development practices.
Lead hiring across engineering — from early-career talent to senior specialists — and define what great looks like at every level.
Manage engineering budget, vendor relationships, and tooling decisions with appropriate rigour.
What you bring
🎮 3D Engine Expertise
Deep hands-on knowledge of 3D engines — whether from gaming (Unreal, Unity), architectural visualisation, or scientific / industrial rendering. You understand the pipeline from geometry and lighting to real-time performance, and you can speak the language of our domain fluently.
🤖 AI-First Mindset
You don't just follow AI developments — you experiment, build intuition, and form strong opinions. You know how to create a framework that separates genuine signal from hype, and you've shipped products that meaningfully leverage AI capabilities.
🏗 Engineering Leadership
10–15 years of total engineering experience, with at least 5 leading engineering teams. You've managed managers, navigated org complexity, and know how to bring a fragmented team back to cohesion without steamrolling what's good about it.
🔭 Product Thinking
You are not purely a delivery machine. You have strong instincts about what to build and why, and you can hold a genuine creative conversation with Product, Design and business leadership about the shape of the offering.
⚡ Energy & Presence
People leave conversations with you feeling clearer, more motivated, and more excited about the work. You bring momentum. You make the engineering organisation feel like a place where interesting things happen — because under your leadership, they do.
🌍 Scale-up Pragmatism
You've operated in environments where the infrastructure is still being built. You know the difference between rigour that matters and process for its own sake. You can operate strategically and roll up your sleeves in the same week.
Core Competencies
3D engine architecture · Real-time rendering · AI/ML integration · Engineering leadership · Team cohesion & culture · Technical vision · Platform & infrastructure · Cloud architecture · Security & compliance · AI adoption frameworks · Product strategy · Technical hiring · Roadmap ownership · Performance engineering · Stakeholder communication
You'll thrive here if:
You are genuinely excited by the unsolved problems at the intersection of 3D, AI and design — not just managing towards a roadmap but exploring what's actually possible.
You find it energising to walk into a fragmented team and see not a problem but a canvas — the raw material for something much better.
You believe the best engineering leaders are also product thinkers, and you have the curiosity and confidence to hold that dual role.
You have strong opinions about AI but hold them lightly enough to update when the experiments say otherwise.
You care deeply about the craft of engineering AND about the humans doing the engineering — both dimensions matter to you, and the team will feel that.
You want to leave a mark — not just ship features, but help build something that changes how an entire industry works.
